11/30/14 EVEN WHEN IT IS NOT ABOUT GOOD AND EVIL

11/30/14 EVEN WHEN IT IS NOT ABOUT GOOD AND EVIL

OK, even if you are not interested in my "churchy" postings you should read this because it is good.

During morning service I was going to make the point that most people don't choose to be Christians because they perceive Bible believers to be on the losing team, and people don't like to be on losing teams. But first I asked the children a question that I thought would prove my point.

All of my grandchildren really like to win at what ever they are playing (especially the boys). So I asked them, "if you came up to some other people playing a ball game, and one was a really strong team that wins and the other was a poor team that usually loses, and they asked you which team you wanted to be on, which team would you choose?" I told them to think it through before they answered.

The 6 year old had his hand up first, so I asked him if he was sure about his answer, and he said yes. Then, in a very serious tone, he said he would join the poor team, so he could help them win. I thought, WOW.

Well, I still had other children to ask, so I proceeded to look for the answer I expected. Every one of them chose the poor team, and mostly for the same reason. (Though the 2 year old girl said, "Steelers"). I questioned them to make sure they were sincere. THEY WERE, and I was flabbergasted, because I know how much they like to win.

As I was thinking about it this afternoon, I realized that I make the same choice at Pball. I really like to win, but I would rather take a chance on losing, if it might help a weak player win. (Of course, I always think I can win, even as the underdog). But I am a mature Christian. I should be selfless. But these are children and I would have understood if they had chosen the strong team. Mostly I was impressed with "why" they chose the poor team. I expect them to make right moral choices, but this was not about good and evil. By the way, I was not the only adult surprised at their answers.
