I spoke to my church tonight, with focus on the children, about the importance of proper respect for other people; you know, the Christian response to others.
I covered a wide spectrum of concepts and an overview of history concerning race relations, which included...
* Negroid, Caucasoid, and Mongoloid designations from the past.
* The proper and improper use of referring to American Indians as Redskins and Indians. Sticklers refer to them as Native Americans, which I find strange that they should be called by the name of an Italian explorer.
* The American transition through various terms for Black people; Negro, Nigger (as a word used to demean black people), Colored (as a word that was not intended to be demeaning, but became disturbing to people), African American and then Black.
* The fact that "Black" is not always a welcome term anymore.
* Racism and violence (in USA and Southern Africa).
* Segregation (separate water coolers, theater and bus seating, restaurant and motel access, forced busing of small white children for desegregating schools).
* The racism of the north as well as the south and the fact that Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation was a political ploy, designed to liberate certain slaves in Confederate held areas, even though there was slavery in northern states as well.
* Red and Yellow, Black and White, they are precious in His sight, Jesus loves the little children of the world.
* God is interested in right attitudes.
* What would Jesus Do?
* Do Unto Others As You Would Have Them Do Unto You.
The input of the children was priceless. I was able to take them back to the 50's and 60's. I pointed out that it is good to see the problems of the past, but they should not judge all of the people of the past. It is easy to find fault after the dust has cleared. I told them that they should Love Their Neighbor As Themselves.
