In 1986 the city of Greensboro, Guilford County in the state of North Carolina considered our church (The Church in the Triad) to be too dangerous to allow us to meet in this Greensboro building. They wanted to control our ministry, raid our church, take our children away from us and put some of us into jail. Not one church in the area stood with us. No support from Dr. D. James Kennedy, Rev. Jerry Fallwell or Pat Robertson (while he was running for POTUS). No government leader stood for our right to minister without State control, including Helms, Coble or Sizemore, though Governor Martin did offer encouragement and advice.
We stood for months, but then sought refuge in a freer state. Our crime; simply doing what Christian ministries had done freely in America for two hundred years. After we left the area, this mosque came in. The State is right; Bible believing Christians are a bigger threat to temporal governments than Islam. However, we wield the Sword of the Spirit and they wield the sword of steel; we do it with love, they do it with violence. It looks like the world would rather have the promise of Islam than the promise of Christ.
Government officials told us we were targeted because of the potential threat we posed for certain State programs. Though the State enforced existing codes on our church, they chose not to hold other churches accountable for the same codes. In fact, the State imposed regulations on our church which were not even on the books.
Remember, we could not get support from lawyers, the government, other churches or Christian groups, though our plight had been told for weeks on three TV stations in the Triad, and had been addressed in various articles in Triad newspapers. We visited churches, government offices and appealed to nationally known Christian organizations.
One of the most respected, and internationally known evangelical voices in the area agreed with our position, Bible stance and historical argument, but said he was not able to join us in our fight. Other nationally positioned Christian leaders agreed with us but chose to help Sun Myung Moon instead. Local, state and federal officials said we were right but it was not their jurisdiction. One local representative (highly esteemed as a Christian) told us to leave the State.
