06/07/14 OBEDIENCE FOLLOWS FAITH
According to an FB friend, John Hagee said,
"It is not what you believe but rather what you obey."
I wrote,
"You obey what (or Who) you believe."
Paul said,
Romans 6:17-18
(17) But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
(18) Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
It seems that God was saying that those who are slaves of sin change their allegiance when they believe in their hearts the doctrines of God, thus becoming slaves of righteousness.
Jesus said,
John 8:32
(32) And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
Anyone can give "lip service" to God, but true faith is seen in how we live.
TRANSLATIONS...
These translations demonstrate that the Ro. 6:17-18 passage indicates that a person obeys what he believes.
New Living Translation (NLT)
(functional translation)
Romans 6:15-18
15 Well then, since God’s grace has set us free from the law, does that mean we can go on sinning? Of course not!
16 Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey? You can be a slave to sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God, which leads to righteous living.
17 Thank God! Once you were slaves of sin, but now you wholeheartedly obey this teaching we have given you.
18 Now you are free from your slavery to sin, and you have become slaves to righteous living.
Amplified Bible (AMP)
(formal translation)
Romans 6:15-18
15 What then [are we to conclude]? Shall we sin because we live not under Law but under God’s favor and mercy? Certainly not!
16 Do you not know that if you continually surrender yourselves to anyone to do his will, you are the slaves of him whom you obey, whether that be to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience which leads to righteousness (right doing and right standing with God)?
17 But thank God, though you were once slaves of sin, you have become obedient with all your heart to the standard of teaching in which you were instructed and to which you were committed.
18 And having been set free from sin, you have become the servants of righteousness (of conformity to the divine will in thought, purpose, and action).
New American Standard Bible (NASB)
(formal translation)
Romans 6:15-18
15 What then? Shall we sin because we are not under law but under grace? May it never be! 16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin [j]resulting in death, or of obedience [k]resulting in righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that [l]though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, 18 and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.
