09/05/14 TAIN'T FUNNY MCGEE

My observation through the years is that it does not take much talent to be viewed as a funny person, if you are willing to use filth as your format. People (adult people) laugh at bathroom and bedroom humor, as well as jokes about Jesus and the Bible. Of course, a little alcohol (or some other inebriant), joined with a personal desire to be irreverent and crude, makes folks laugh at almost anything.

When the performers really are talented and they mix their abilities with cheap humor, then they become iconic. Robin Williams and Joan Rivers (among others) were talented people who chose to mix their funniness with crudeness and blasphemy. Williams' piece on the invention of Golf is funny, but then he portrayed God as vile and filthy.

But to be honest, there are some things that are not proper targets of humor. And that is the problem... PROPER. We live in a time when "PROPER" is seen as prudish and something that must be violated or destroyed. Even pedophile jokes are considered funny by some folks, especially if they are told by popular comedians, in a stage show.

It is not as if there are no standards or lines that must not be crossed. Our society follows the rising and falling standards of acceptability, based on Political Correctness (or fear of Muslim retaliation). Even the use of the word NIGGER is accepted and funny to some people (not just among black people) when it is used by a popular comic (black or white), in a closed venue. Joan Rivers was angry when Jews for Jesus bought ad space on her show. I guess humor is a single "edgy" sword, only to be used by the Christless.

I think God has, "a sense of humor," or at least He has no problem with us laughing at things that are actually funny. But God does not laugh at the crude or the blasphemous, and neither should we.

When we laugh at the "edgy" humor of popular comics, we are telling more about our own thoughts and values than the funniness of the comic.

I hope you will read the following Bible passage, which addresses this subject, and that you will allow Jesus to be Lord of your humor and values. Verse 4 is the point of my posting, but the first verses and last verses put it in perspective.

Ephesians 5:1-12
(1) Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;
(2) And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
(3) But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;
(4) Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.
(5) For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
(6) Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.
(7) Be not ye therefore partakers with them.
(8) For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
(9) (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)
(10) Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
(11) And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.
(12) For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

Question... "Where is it more important to keep our conversation clean; at an office party, or in Church?"

Answer... "Neither."
