George Jones said it in song:
If You Don't Want To (kiss me, hold me, love me) Baby... Somebody Else Will Do It Better
People in our society are saying the same thing to Christians (about God, the Bible, Salvation, Faith); and the cultists are waiting like vultures to devour them, as Christians fail to provide basic answers to legitimate questions (fail to provide light to those lost in the night; fail to give hope to those at the end of their rope).
People do not want to commit themselves to a product, a program a person that does not offer a whole package of services, such as health care, investments, education; therefore it is reasonable that they do not want to commit to a message or ministry that does not offer answers to their reasonable and basic questions about God, the Bible, Salvation, Faith and Eternity; and they do not want to follow the counsel (witness) of people who are not confident and convinced about their own belief system.
This is where the cults come into the picture. Though the proponents of cultic beliefs are following false doctrine, they present an attitude of confidence and knowledge, which most Christians lack (though the Christian believes the true gospel). The unsaved blind follow the blind cultists, not because their message is better, but because they seem to have more answers and seem to be more committed.
Christians do not have to be theologians to be good witnesses, but they do need to be ready to give a reason for their faith (1 Pe. 3:15). While we are saved by simple faith in Christ, we are not convinced by a simplistic witness or presentation of the gospel. People want something substantial to believe in, not a subjective opinion that someone endorses.
All of the right answers in the Bible will not convince some people, and the best witnesses do not always win the lost. However, if we are going to be fishers of men, we should know how to fish.
Fire From Heaven...
It is important for Christians to be "on fire for Jesus" (Mt. 3:11), without, "commanding fire to come down from heaven to consume" the lost (Lk. 9:54-56). People will gather to see a house on fire, but they won't show up to have someone burn down their house.
1 Peter 3:15
15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Matthew 3:11
11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
Luke 9:54-56
54 And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did?
55 But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.
56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.
