A sign of successful parenting and ministry is not the constant exhorting to accomplishment: it is when the children and parishioners are asking for spiritual guidance as they are moving toward becoming all that God wants them to become. The exhorting is what God uses to spur them to move in the right direction.
For instance, the coach's pep talk is not the sign of success, though it is a factor used to spur-on success. Some of the greatest pep talks may have been spent on losing teams, because the players lacked the desire and the drive to win.
